Saturday, February 27th, 2021 Exploring on HHI
The first thing we did this morning was go to McDonalds for breakfast. The dining room was not open because they did not have sufficient staff available so that there was someone free to clean and disinfect. So, we ordered our food and took it to a shelter adjacent to the parking lot and sat on benches to eat it. There was a homeless man there and Peggy purchased some breakfast food for him. Then we went to look for a Visitors Center to get information about taking a ferry to Daufuskie Island. We were successful in getting the info. and then we located the spot where the ferry leaves and then we called and made the reservations for the ferry and for a golf cart to use once we get there.
David and Peggy wanted to go to a spot outside of a golf course and look for golf balls and I agreed. I stuck with them for about fifteen minutes and by then I was not finding any balls and getting my legs scratched up, so I walked back to the car and waited for them and then I drove down and picked them up. They found about 40 balls! Some of them were the more expensive kind.
Then it was time for some exploring. First we stopped at Fort Howell. This old fort was built using earthen walls, which still stand. They had a lot of signage telling the history of this place. I was surprised to find out that Harriet Tubman is part of HHI history.
Earthen walls represent the structure of the fort.
Then to MITCHELVILLE – THE FIRST SELF-GOVERNED FREEDMEN’S TOWN IN AMERICA.
and then to the UNION CEMETERY just outside of Mitchelville. This is the first time I have seen these rectangular slabs in front of the grave markers.
I love these handmade grave markers.
Then to Krogers for a few groceries
Back at the condo,
we prepared supper. Cod again, and it was very good.
