MEMORIAL DAY 2021 BIRD ISLAND PIER

Image
Vicky called me this morning and we arranged to go together to the open house for HERITAGE CHRISTIAN SERVICES new house in Amherst on Wednesday. Peggy asked me several days ago if I wanted to do something on Memorial Day since she has a day off from work.  I agreed and put together a list of ideas for what we might do.  She chose to go to BIRD ISLAND PIER in Buffalo.  I met up with her at her house at ten thirty this morning and we headed towards Buffalo. We drove around in a circle trying to find the park where the pier starts.  We found it and parked and got started.  I took several pictures. These four are before the pier.   We walked a little over a mile. I think the whole pier is about two miles long.  It is a very interesting walk.   You walk under the PEACE BRIDGE, which is only open now for truck deliveries.  and then quit because I did not feel comfortable climbing down this ladder.  It was NOT attached anywhere....

After church today, I wanted to do something, but I knew it was too late to set something up with a friend, so after having lunch at home (hot dog), I drove to the Discovery Center in order to take the new shuttle around Lockport.  My timing was perfect because as soon as I arrived, the shuttle bus arrived.  I was the only passenger.  It was the Lockport route bus (as opposed to the route that goes to Niagara Falls and back).  The driver said that it has been very slow and that I was the third person to ride it today.  In the evening, I talked to both Peggy and Barb on the phone.  I also called Vicky and left her a message about the open house at Heritage Christian Services new home in Amherst.   I settled in to watch TV and decided on THE QUEEN AT WAR on PBS On Demand.  It is VERY GOOD! Then I decided to see what I might find on the new ROKU TV and found a British detective series WYCLIFFE and watched Season One Episode One.

I was still in bed this morning when Elaine called.  She asked me if I could help her and Nancy this morning.  Nancy just purchased a house and is in the process of moving in.  However, one of her cats bit her on the wrist and later on the same day or next day, while moving something heavy she banged that wrist on a doorway and broke a bone.  She is not supposed to be lifting anything.  Elaine has been her main helper and her knees are really bothering her.  I agreed to help. After Elaine and I got to Nancy's house, we helped Nancy pack and move boxes into our cars.  We also took down curtains, etc.  Then we all drove separately to the new place and unloaded boxes and items into Nancy's garage.  Altogether, this took a little over three hours. Nancy's new house is a three bedroom ranch on a nice lot (Angela Lane) that has two interesting outbuildings, and a one car garage.  I didn't get to see the inside because Nancy is concerned ...

I slept in a little bit this morning, actually I had my laptop in bed, and I was working on labelling my pictures from the Letchworth trip.  I made some good progress.   I prepared banana pancakes for breakfast using the GLUTEN FREE BISQUICK I got at Wegmans last week.   I called Dr. Chubineh's office and made an appointment to see him BEFORE the scheduled colonoscopy, since I just do not feel comfortable going ahead with it without discussing it with him first.   I called Univera and confirmed that they will cover a colonoscopy (with a copay). I went to the library and read the local newspapers for the time  I was away, and I went to Rite Aid and picked up my meds.  I went to CHINA KING and purchased chicken fried rice, one egg roll and a quart of wonton soup for my lunch. I had a nice nap and then I went over to Betty's place and picked up my mail and we visited for a while.  I gave her a half a loaf of banana bread.  We dis...

Thursday, May 27th, 2021 Leaving Letchworth

Leslie wanted to go to a bird watching event this morning which started at seven a.m.  She set the alarm on her phone to go off at six a.m.  We both got up and got ready for the day and said our goodbyes and she left in plenty of time.  I left about an hour later after taking a couple of pictures inside the hotel. I only made one picture taking stop, in Silver Springs, where I saw the MORTON SALT FACTORY.    My trip home was uneventful, but I realized while driving just how tired I was.  When I got home, I started a load of laundry, listened to phone messages, put stuff away and then I took a nap.

May 26th, 2021 Out and About (Letchworth Trip)

This was our (Leslie and I) second full day of our trip.   We have spent the past day and a half IN the park, hiking, geocaching and exploring.  Since geocaching here is so difficult we decided to go outside of the park and geocaching in the area west of the park.  But first, we had breakfast at the GLEN IRIS, where we were staying.  I had oatmeal, which came with a huge carrot/bran muffin and fresh fruit, along with a cup of hot tea.  Leslie had pancakes and sausage.  My meal was delicious.  Our two breakfasts came to around thirty dollars, by far the most expensive breakfast I have ever had. Leslie treated me instead of giving me gas money, since I have been doing all the driving around during this trip.  After we were done eating, we got together information about the geocaches we wanted to find and headed out.    Our first stop was near Lamont where we found our first geocache THE GONE WITH THE WIND GEOCACHE at a neat old ...

May 25th, 2021 First FULL Day in Letchworth

Leslie found her GPS, it had slid down between the passenger seat and the console in my car.  YAY!!! It turned out to be a rather hot day and we spent most of the day in the park.  We looked for several geocaches that we did not find.   We drove to the north end of the park in order to find GIBSONVILLE, which contains the remnants of a CCC camp and a two part geocache.  The first part involved a short walk into the woods on the opposite side of the road from Gibsonville, where we found a cache that had a key in it to open the final geocache.  So we did that and crossed the road and followed the trail. This sign is along the main road in the park. One of the few remnants of the camp. This muddy waterfalls is close to the place where we found the final geocache. The trail took us to the CCC chimney and an informational sign.   The chimney has been restored and is quite beautiful.  There is very little left in the line of ruins  besid...
