October 7th, 2018: MANZANAR and ARRIVAL IN DEATH VALLEY

Image
We left our lodging in Bishop pretty early this morning, after breakfast in our room (provided by America's Best Value Inn),  We headed south towards MANZANAR MANZANAR was great!!!!  First we spent some time in the museum/visitors center and then we drove around the remains of the camp. After leaving there, we stopped in LONE PINE Pine and had chicken and french fries and ice cream at FROSTY CHALET.  We noticed a Visitors Center as we turned towards Death Valley National Park, so we stopped.  It was for Mt. Whitney.  MA stamped her passport and purchased some post cards. We drove towards DV, making a few stops along the way. We HAD to top to watch some cowboys drive their black cows across the road. Father John Crowley Point was very picturesque. We went through Panamint Springs.  We finally got to Stovepipe Wells and went directly to the Ranger Station/Visitors Center. It is not much of a Visitors Center...

October 6th. 2018 Leaving Yosemite and Driving to Bishop

Image
We got up early and checked out around 7:45.  It was a beautiful drive out of the park... here are a few pictures …………….saw   Olmstead   Point again, this time with a blue sky and sunshine.  Tenaya Lake is gorgeous!   Stopped at the Mobil station just outside of Lee Vining and purchased gas, ice, sandwiches etc.  I bought a  long sleeved blue  Yosemite T-shirt. Drove to Bishop, found laundromat and started laundry and then went to motel AMERICAS BEST VALUE INN an checked in. Around 3:45 I drove MaryAnne  to church.  On the way there, my TomTom gave up  the ghost.  I tried everything to get it working.  After I dropped her off, I located a KMart and looked for a new one.  I was told that they do not sell them anymore. I picked MaryAnne up at church and noticed a table set up in front of the church.  I asked what kind of food they were selling and was told that everything was free:  ...

October 5, 2018 FULL DAY IN YOSEMITE

Image
We first went to the Visitors Center and watched a movie, stopped to get ice at a store on the way back to the car (it was a long walk between the parking lot and the Visitors Center) Headed out towards Glacier Point.............made a couple of stops on the way to take pics.  GLACIER POINT is gorgeous   I left a rock there (the one I found in Rome, NY). We bought ice cream at the snack shop: Headed back to the "Village", stopping for lunch at a beautiful spot along a creek (had cheese and crackers). Looked for the trailhead to El Capitan that I saw on the way out earlier in the day but never saw it.  After driving all the way down to the hotel, we drove back out and parked across from trailheads to Lower Yosemite Falls.  We walked the trail to it.  The falls is only a trickle now. Decided to go back to our cabin, but had a heck of a time finding it...wasted about 45 minutes before we finally got to it.  We walked over to the cafe...

Oct. 4, 2018 From Bridgeport to Yosemite

Image
We left our lodging about nine a.m.  We stopped at the Bridgeport Post Office and purchased  bubble wrap (for pinecones we found and were taking back to NY).  Then we headed to Lee Vining (stopped to find a geocache at the library here) and turned onto 120 and stopped at a Mobil (Tioga Gas Mart)  and we bought gas, sandwiches and ice and MA bought a t shirt. Entered Yosemite and drove to the other end of the park.........stopping occasionally to take pictures, but unfortunately it was quite foggy. We each ate half of our sandwich at a pullover.  By this time, we had found out that the hood of our rental car made a good picnic table! with bathrooms and talked to a fellow who was cleaning them.  (last name Simmons). We drove past Yosemite Village where our lodging was and arrived at the Wawana Visitors Center, where we took the shuttle to the Mariposa Grove.  The grove is gorgeous, but you cannot walk out among the large sequoias,becaus...
