Friday June 29, 2018: Carol's Birthday

Image
Today was Carol's birthday.  We had plans to go to ANIMAL ADVENTURE PARK in Harpursville.  On the way there, Carol showed me her sons new house. We arrived at the park a little after ten a.m. The park was very busy.  We especially enjoyed the giraffes. but there were a lot more animals to see and experience. We were there for over  two hours and then we headed to Bainbridge where we went to FrogPond Farms.  The donut shop was open and I purchased a donut to take to Connie tomorrow.  I tried a few samples of the fruits and vegetable. We ended up at WATTLES FERRY PARK in Unadilla where we had a picnic lunch, before heading back to Carol's place.  In New Berlin, we stopped at REMEMBER WHEN, so I could go in and make a reservation for supper.   The building was a hospital in a former life. After a couple hours rest, we went to REMEMBER WHEN for supper.  I treated Carol, for her birthday.  We each ordered a different fish dinner and we shared.   I used

Thursday June 28th, 2018: Leaving Rome, Driving to Carol's Place

This morning I met the next door neighbors who are from Franklin.  The wife gave me a photograph of their cottage from l961, to give to Mike.  I left it on their table and Mary and I both wrote in the "log". Mary and I did not hurry and it took until close to eleven a.m. to get our cars loaded and the cottage straighteed up.  Then we took a walk around the camp so we could take pictures.  We both particularly like the stone cottage.   People have been arriving for FAMILY CAMP since yesterday and the place is starting to get busy.  Mary headed out first and I stayed a couple of minutes more and almost forgot to close the front shutter.  I stopped on 26 before Rome to get gas and then continued on 26.  It was my plan to stay on 26 for a while but somehow I got off of it and had to stop and come up with another plan.  After I started on my new route, I stopped and made myself a sandwich and had some chips and a drink with it.  I drove through a VERY LARGE A

Wednesday, June 27th in Rome, NY

First thing today, we visited the restored H.P. SEARS gas station in Rome.  It has been restored to how it looked in l930.   I had been before, but this was Mary's first time.  Pat Corbett showed us around and explained the history of this building/business.  He is indeed passionate about this spot. After that we located the GRIFFIS SCULPTURE PARK and walked around part of it.  It is a beautiful, well cared for area.  I found a geocache that I did not know was there, and I also found a painted rock. Then we decided to return to DiCastro's for lunch.  We ordered a combo of a small pizza and a pound of chicken wings.  Both were very good. We decided to try to find a way to get to the part of ERIE CANAL VILLAGE that was on the other side of the bridge (Mary did not feel comfortable crossing the bridge yesterday), but we could not get to it.  We did find a road that seemed to be  taking us to that spot, but we encountered a barricade which led to a closed bridge, so we gave u

Mary and I headed first to the Rome Sand Plains.  The directions we had did not help, so we went to the Chamber of Commerce for help and we still had trouble, but eventually we did find a trailhead for a great hike. Then we went to the abandoned Erie Canal Village which closed a few years ago. Then to Ferlo's Original Bakery and then to a park for lunch.  We met Anthony who manages a program for kids there, he took us around, explained what they do, introduced us to other staff and showed us the pool. Then we decided to go to Sylvan Beach, but we stopped at Gaultieri's on the way.  Parked near the public beach in Sylvan Beach and walked along the shore and also walked around the amusement park, hoping the building that offered games was open (sign said it was), but it was closed. We located the lighthouse and then drove around the state park and then decided to drive around Oneida Lake.  Saw a neat store, but it was closed.  Mary mentione

Monday June 25, 2018: Drive to Rome

I left Lockport at 8:10 a.m. this morning and headed for Rome.  I got on the thruway at Pembroke and headed east.  I had already talked to Mary and she indicated that her plans were to leave Oneonta at noon, so I knew I had extra time.  Soooooooooooooo I stopped at the OLD ERIE CANAL HERITAGE PARK in Port Byron, NY.  I accessed it from the thruway.  You can see the remnants of the old locks from the thruway in fact I stopped once a few years ago and walked around them. I was there for longer than I planned because the two docents in the old restored tavern (Erie House) were so enthused and wanted to explain everything to me.  It is indeed impressive.  Most of what you see is original, a few things are reproductions.  There is also a blacksmith shop and a mule shed. I arrived at Mike's cottage at DELTA LAKE CONFERENCE CENTER around 1:45 I think.  Mary called around two and said she got held up and was leaving then.   She suggested that I take a nap, so I tried.  I also s

I went to the COMMUNITY GARDEN this morning.  There were several people there.    I harvested some more  swiss chard, thinned out my carrots,  took off some excess "creepers" from my tomato plants and was happy to see that the flower I planted on Thursday (Jaelin gave it to me to transplant) has perked up nicely. Jessica, who lives across the street, donated two plastic Adirondack chairs, but she could not bring them over due to her recent spinal surgery.  Dave and I went and got them.  I cleaned them off and then Jessica and I moved them and arranged them so that they would not be in front of the caterpillar. I met Pam at Reids and we ate outside and then went home.  Peggy was there.  I showered and she worked in the back yard and then we went to Lewiston where we visited Carrie for a few minutes.  We stopped at HIBBARDS and at a farmstand/nursery on the way back to Lockport.  I dropped her off at her house and went home.

THE GREAT RACE: Lockport, NY (June 22.2018)

I had a few errands to run this morning, and when I was finished I found a parking spot near Main Street, nd walked down to this event: I had gone to a similar event in Cooperstown before I moved to Lockport.   The event was just starting as I walked towards it.  I stayed for about a half an hour and took some pictures: Then I went home and had lunch and a nap and got up in time to meet Peggy at Faith Tab so I could ride out to Middleport with her.  She had agreed to pick up Jesse Beachy and take him to the airport.  We got to see Johanna Beachy, who is about to turn three.   She was sent home to die when she was an infant due to a rare disorder, but she is saying a few words and taking a few steps and is so cute.  I would have loved to take a picture of her but the Beachy's are Amish...………….. After dropping Jesse off, Peggy and I went to one of our favorite restaurants MoMo's Mongolian Grill.  We each had two plates of stir fry that we put together ourselves.  Th

Organ Concert at The Dale, with Marlene

Marlene asked me if I wanted to go to an ORGAN CONCERT at the Dale Association tonight and I agreed.  I arrived before her an paid and picked up a schedule of future concerts. Tonight's organist was Joe Donohue.  He played on this organ which is a THEATRE ORGAN! The Lockport Theatre Organ Society is a non-profit organization formed to promote the Theatre Organ.  The Wurlitzer organ is located in the Bette Dale Building in an assembly activities room.  The concert was very good.

COMMUNITY GARDEN AND LEWISTON OPEN GARDEN

Image
Every Saturday morning, pod members are supposed to be at the community garden from ten a.m. until noon.  I arrived at ten and stayed close to an hour because it was so hot an humid.  Before leaving, Pam and I agreed to go to Lewiston for the yearly OPEN GARDEN.   She brought lunch items over to my house so that we could pack a picnic lunch but we decided to eat before going to Lewiston. We found a parking spot on Fifth Street and walked up to Center Street.  We checked out some of the vendors and then we stopped by a booth where this man was helping people make fluffy paper flowers. We each made one We went into a small shop that I had never seen before:    I don't know if the name of the shop is REMEMBER WHEB? or MOTHER'S MOVIES? but here are a couple of pictures I took inside By this time, we had picked up maps of where the OPEN GARDENs were.  We went to one along River Road...…….it was beautiful The heat was getting to both of us, so we decided we
