Monday April 3, 2023 in Ohio Amish Area (First Full Day)

 We had breakfast at our lodging.  It was a very nice spread of food including waffles, cereal, banana bread, fresh fruit, bagels and toast, hard boiled eggs and more.  I had a banana and oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar and a piece of blueberry/banana bread.  

Our first stop of the day was at the Amish-Mennonite Visitors Center.  We watched the fifteen minute video about Amish life in the area.

Unfortunately, we were told  that BEHALT is closed today and tomorrow, but we can see it Wednesday morning before we leave.   This attraction now offers tours of two other buildings, a barn and a one room school.  

We met up with our tour guide Richard Troyer and a couple who were taking the tour with us. 



We were given the opportunity to choose three Amish businesses off of a list.  We chose the Amish quilt shop, a harness shop and a basket makers shop in Apple Creek.  The basket makers shop is in a building separate from the owners house.  

I stepped outside of the basket shop to look around while the others were still shopping.  It was a beautiful area.  




 I purchased some shoelaces in the harness shop.

   It was a three hour tour, and we saw a lot including several schools and a lot of Amish children playing outside.  The tour ended at one p.m. at the Behalt.  Marlene and I drove back to Mt. Hope to Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen for lunch.

  I had the buffet, but Marlene ordered from the menu.  The buffet was not as large as I expected, but everything was very good.  

Richard had mentioned the EXOTIC WOOD at KEIM's in Charm, so I suggested to Marlene that we go there. 


It is a HUGE hardware and home improvement store.  We loved the exotic wood
and each bought a very small item.  Then we went back to the motel and rested before supper.  We were planning on eating at DER DUTCHMAN which was right around the corner from our lodging, but it was closed.  We found a small cafe (Cafe Chrysalis) not far from our lodging and had supper there.  The menu was very small and I chose a house salad with chicken.  It was HUGE and half of it ended up being thrown out.  

I called the phone number for ERB'S Museum, but he did not answer.  I left a message. We hope to see his COLEMAN MUSEUM in Sugarcreek tomorrow.

 This was what I saw out the window when I got up. The RUBY PRINCESS had stopped and we were in Skagway!  We had breakfast at the Botticelli (I had a soft boiled egg, toast, oatmeal and a banana) and then we returned to our room to get ready for getting off the ship and going to Skagway.  We got tickets for Shuttle #10 and went down to wait to be called.  Things moved along fairly quickly. The shuttle boat was one of the lifeboats, it took us to the mainland.  This is a view of the RUBY PRINCESS from the port.   When we arrived we took a shuttle to the downtown area where we walked around a bit. Week of Sunday, August 10th through Saturday, August 16th, 2025 (Recipe for Crazy Crust Pie)

 SUNDAY:   I took my trash out early today and it was SO HOT, that I felt that my breath had been sucked out of me.  I messaged Jan about it, since her asthma really bothers her in hot weather and I knew that she might be better off staying home from church.  Church was very good, the Eastmans performed and spoke.  After church, Glenda, Andrea, Marlene and I went to THE OLIVE LEAF for lunch.  I had the turkey dinner, which was very good even though they did not serve my gravy on the side like I requested.  I brought a lot of turkey and also my whole gen salad home.  Andrea told us the story about how she and two of her kids along with other people in a church she attended in Ohio went down to New Orleans to help out after Hurricane Katrina.  When I got home, I watched part of the four part documentary about  it.  HURRICANE KATRINA:  Race Against Time.  Crazy Crust Pie 1 C. flour 1/4 C. sugar 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 t...

In the morning, I called an antique dealer and asked if he would be interested in looking at the furniture in Mary Anne's cottage.  It looks to me as if several pieces are antiques.  He is interested, and we will get together soon.   On the way  to Olcott, I stopped at a donation box and dropped off three or four bags of clothing.  Once I got to her cottage, I tackled the kitchen.  Betty did not do a good job of straightening out under the sink yesterday so I took everything out and started again.  I was able to finish the entire kitchen, but the floor still needs scrubbing.  I will need water to do that.  Today, I took my own water. I stopped at Reid's and picked up a burger and fries.  I took a nap in the afternoon, and when I got up, I reorganized most of my spices.
