SUNDAY the 24th: Church was very good this morning and after that there was a spaghetti dinner and basket raffle in the small sanctuary to raise money for the men who are going to Southern Mexico on a mission trip early next year. The number of people who went was kind of low. I bought twenty dollars worth of tickets even though I didn't see anything that I really wanted because I wanted to support the mens group. Elizabetty won THREE baskets.
I won a gift certificate for twenty dollars for COUSINS CAFE, so I got my twenty dollars back. Lori won a certificate for a shampoo and haircut. Glenda didn't win anything. Marlene didn't buy any tickets, and she left before the drawing. Before going home, I went to ALDI to get milk and Cool Whip, but they did not have any Cool Whip. I need it for the chocolate cream pie I will make on Thanksgiving morning.
In the evening I found the show HOW IT REALLY HAPPENED on CNN, about the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis. A movie was made about it (ARGO), in fact six of the state department workers in the American Embassy who escaped being held hostage pretended to be making that movie, as directed by the CIA.
“Iran Hostages: The Dangerous Journey Home” | Sunday, November 24 at 9pm ET/PT
When Iranian students stormed the US Embassy in Tehran in November 1979, they took the Embassy staff hostage and held them for 444 days. Only a handful managed to escape, but they were trapped in Iran until the CIA came up with a daring plan to bring them home. This top-secret mission was the subject of the Academy Award-winning film Argo. In this episode, several former hostages detail their time in captivity, and three of the Tehran Six escapees tell of their daring rescue.
I saw this recipe on FB, and it is supposed to resemble Campbells Bean with Bacon Soup.
8 oz. Bacon
1 cup diced yellow onions
1 cup diced carrots
1 cup diced celery
4 cups chicken broth
3 cans 15 oz each Great Northern beans, drained and rinsed
salt and pepper
1 can 8 oz tomato sauce
maybe add a dash of liquid smoke.
I think I would or will blend part or all of it up (maybe not the bacon) to get the creaminess similar to Campbells.
MONDAY, November 25th: I met with a man at the Lockport AAA office in order to review my car insurance and see if AAA (who now sells insurance) could offer me a better price. They could not, but I am supposed to get a twenty five dollar gift card for following through with that. AAA is right across from a small TOPS so I went in and purchased a couple of items I need. I spent the rest of the day at home. First I made the cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving Day. I looked for and found a recipe for chocolate peanut butter cream pie! I cleaned and organized and vacuumed the kitchen, dining area and living room. I was really worn out, so I laid down on the couch for a while and I must have dozed off for a but, but probably not for long. Shortly after I got up, I used the leftover rice from Steak, Stone and Sushi to make fried rice, adding the leftover steak, an egg, and sauteed onions and peppers and I also baked a small acorn squash. That was my supper. Marlene called me at six p.m. and asked me if I wanted to go to see the movie BONHOEFFER at the Regal Transit Theatre. I asked her what time we would have to meet up and she said "in twenty minutes". I told her I was not dressed and it might take me a little longer than twenty minutes to get ready and drive to Freedom South Church. It turned out that I was there five minutes before she arrived!!! We got to the theatre with plenty of time to spare and sat through about twenty minutes of previews. A couple of the movies sound and look good. BONHOEFFER was absolutely wonderful. I would like to see it a second time.
TUESDAY the 26th: I enjoyed the Tuesday morning Ladies Life Group, it was a small group. five of us went to THE FIELDSTONE for lunch. I had the baked fish and brought enough hme for my supper. I spent the rest of the day at home.
Peggy called. David's daughter, Katherine, is interested in purchasing this house, the one I live in. Peggy reassured me that the house will not be sold until everything else is worked out, meaning that they plan on adding a couple of rooms to their house for me to live in. She said that is what both she and David want to happen. She also said that if I do not want that to happen, then we will not sell the house. I own half of the house, and I guess we will use the money from its sale to add on to their house. I do not look forward to moving, but I think this is the best thing to do, and I will be closer to church, the Y, and many other places that I go.
Jan messaged me and she wants to go to the Y tomorrow to walk the track. But it depends on whether or not the workers are at her apartment or not. We will touch bases at eleven a.m. and if she is free we will meet up before Marlene, Lori and I meeet up at Freedom in order to go to the movie THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER at the Regal on Transit.
WEDNESDAY November 27th. I put away clean laundry and did a couple of other small tasks before leaving the house. I dropped off an overdue book at the library and then met up with Marlene and Lori at Freedom Church. Marlene drove and we went to the Regal on Transit to see the movie THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER.
It was very good. Marlene could not go out to supper with us, so Lori and I went to the OLIVE TREE when we got back to Lockport. I had the liver and onions and it was VERY GOOD, it came with a good sized salad, grilled vegetables and a baked potato. I could not eat all of it. Then I went to Niagara Produce and got milk, carrots and celery. I hope to make turkey soup on Friday and have it for supper that night, after Leslie arrives. When I got home, there was a message from Peggy. Betty's car broke down in front of the downtown RiteAid. Peggy finished up what she was doing and then she want to RiteAid and waited for the tow truck with her. Unfortunately, when Betty was getting out of her car she fell and landed hard. Peggy said she is probably all bruised up.
THANKSGIVING DAY: I got quite a bit of sleep last night, even though I got up two or three times to use the bathroom. In the morning, I prepared the squash and made the chocolate cream pie. I called Betty to set a time for me to pick her up to go to Peg's house and we did that, but she called later on and said she is just ot up to going. I agreed to bring her a plate of food and a slice of lemon meringue pie. I called Megan's house and Tyler answered and we talked for a few minutes. He said Megan was involved in baking and would call me back in ten minutes. She called back and we talked for a bit. I also spoke to Tyler and he seemed more lively than he did in previous conversations. I went over to Pegs house, arriving at a few minutes after three thirty p.m. I had to reroute myself due to something going on at the intersection of Beattie and Lincoln. There was a firetruck and other rescue vehicles and they were not allowing anyone through. Becky somehow made a wrong turn and missed the hold up. It was cleared out before Katherine arrived. For Thanksgiving dinner there was me, Peggy, David, Katherine and Becky. We had turkey, stuffing and gravy that David prepared, and all three were great! I provided butternut squash, the cranberry sauce and a chocolate peanut butter pie. There were mashed potatoes and baked sweet potatoes and brown and serve rolls. For desert there were TWO banana cream pies, lemon meringue and my pb choc. pie. When we were done, we put together a large meal for a couple who Peggy has been helping. We also put together a meal for Betty which I delivered to her. I brought a TON of food home, including the carcass, stuffing, squash, one large sweet potato, a whole package of rolls, a whole banana cream pie and one large piece of pb/chocolate pie and a piece of lemon meringue pie, as well as quite a bit of my cranberry sauce. When I delivered Betty's meal to her, she looked awful and she was holding her right arm in a very protective way. When I got home, I decided to start making turkey soup. I took most of the meat off of the carcass (I found that David left a LOT of stuffing in the bird), cut up carrots, celery, a small amount of onion and green pepper. I started the carcass simmering in water, for a couple of hours. It is now almost nine p.m. and I am watching an old episode of LAW AND ORDER SVU. I will turn the stove off in a few minutes and let the carcass, meat, water etc. cool down and then move the bones to another pot, and set both pots on the front porch overnight. In the morning, I will start the final step, meat, vegetables, broth and seasonings in the crockpot.
I called both Christa and Cassandra to wish them a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Neither one answered but Christa called back and we talked for close to an hour. She was very loving and sweet.
FRIDAY: First thing today I took the turkey off of the bones, and threw everything together for turkey soup into my large crockpot. Then I went over and visited Carrie for a few minutes. I stopped at the very small TOPS in Sanborn and purchased a few items. When I got home, I had a turkey sandwich. Then I laid down on the couch for a nap and I slept some. When I got up, I started making cranberry orange shortbread cookies for Sunday's Christms party at Freedom Church. Leslie arrived while I was involved with that. She brought her stuff in and got settled somewhat. We each ate one cookie. I told her to relax and we found a movie on HOOPLA that she liked. When it was nearly over, I served supper and she finished watching the movie while I cleaned up the kitchen. The turkey soup is very good and we finished off the pie that I brought home from Peggy's house. We watched the movie PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS and both enjoyed it We looked at information about tomorrow's event LIGHT UP LOCKPORT.
SATURDAY the 30th: Leslie and I headed out a little after ten a.m. to go to LIGHT UP LOCKPORT. We first went to Windsor Village where we had hot cider and looked around. There are a lot of vintage items reasonably priced and also, way down at the west end, there is a small hair salon which charges fifty dollars per haircut. Then we went to the library for crafts, but it turned out the crafts were only for kids. I showed Leslie around the library and we looked at the used books for sale and I found two books that I will send to Connie and Leslie found a book, too. We went over to the ice arena and watched a couple of minutes of a kids hockey game and then saw the display for the WORLDS LARGEST CHRISTAS CARD (for our service men and women) and we signed it.
Then we went to the KENAN CENTER, thinking that they offered crafts, but I had read the information wrong and the Kenan Center sponsored crafts but had them at THE PALACE. We went to Papa Leo's for a free slice of pizza and then to the Palace which turned out to offer a lot of activities for kids.
I pointed out some of the features of the newly restored Palace to Leslie. Then we went to the HOT CHOCOLATE TRAIL, just outside the Bewley Building. You visit four stores, picking up an item at each. A cup, a wrapper for the cup, the hot chocolate and then sprinkles and marshmallows at the final stop. Then I took Leslie to see the old tavern in Warrens Corners. And then I showed her the stone house where my great grandmother died in a fire on her birthday. We went back to my house to use the bathroom. Peggy was there, working in the garage. Then we went to THE CHAPEL for their event,
which was kind of like a mini amusement park with lots of activities for kids and some free food (but the free food was not as good as it was in previous years). In the old Friendlies, I ran into Megan Fresch who was there with her SIX boys, her son and five foster children. The baby is so cute, his name is Emmanuel. After the Chapel, we went home and I took a nap while Leslie was reading. We decided to go to Wagners for supper, which was good. In the evening, we watched THOMAS KINCAID'S CHRISTMAS COTTAGE. Leslie packed herself a lunch to take with her tomorrow.
