WEEK of August 17th through August 23rd, 2025 (including Chautauqua trip)

SUNDAY the 17th:   Marlene got to my house right around nine a.m.  As we were loading her car, she mentioned that she had forgotten to pack a lunch, so I went back in and made her an egg salad sandwich to take.  We stopped to get gas, and then drove straight through to the Chautaugua Institution.  We went into the Visitors Center and picked up our free day passes and then we decided to eat our lunch on the front porch of the Visitors Center and then we went into the Institution.  We waited at the bus stop for the appropriate time of our tour.  As we were walking the short distance to the parked buses, one of the bus drivers told us that todays tour was cancelled due to there not being a driver available.  We returned to the VC hoping to exchange the useless tickets for tickets for tomorrow, but tomorrows tour is full.  Also, I was told that my money had been refunded to my credit card.  Since my CC bill had not arrived yet, I did not know about this.  We returned to the Institute and waited for a bus again, while we looked over the schedule and deciding what we might do.  We finally decided on going to the bookstore first, and then to the Palestine Park.  The bookstore is amazing and expensive, and Marlene purchased several books for her grandchildren.

I didn't buy anything.  Then we caught the bus to Palestine, stopping first at the bell tower.

Palestine Park was not what I expected.

Then we started walking to get to the place we decided to have supper THE TALLY HO.  Lucky for us, a bus came along and drove us partway.  We found the restaurant at about five minutes to five p.m.  There were a few other customers waiting to be let in.

The hostess finally arrived AFTER five p.m. and several minutes later we were let in and given a table.  Nobody waited on us, so I finally got up and looked for the buffet, and asked a guy in that area if we could get started and he said yes.  The buffet ($26) was very underwhelming.  They did not have the PERCH that was advertised on the sign in front, it was haddock.  After that, we headed to a bus stop and took the blue bus back to the front, and we used the Ladies room before going to the car.  We drove to Westfield and got our motel room at THE THEATRE MOTEL.

It is not at all fancy, but the price is right.  I checked email and face book and uploaded my pictures to my chrome book.

MONDAY August 18th:  First thing this morning (after packing up and checking out) we decided we needed to try to take care of the low tire pressure on Marlene's car.  The warning light had come on yesterday.  We went to AUTO ZONE first but they sent us to another place, the WESTFIELD AUTO CENTER.

where the issue was taken care of quickly, with no charge.  Then we went to "downtown" Westfield to look for a place for breakfast.  A couple of places were not open, and it did not look like the diner was open, but we found a coffee shop that was very nice.

We had breakfast sandwiches.  Over breakfast, we discussed what to do before the ABC speaker at three p.m. in the Chautauqua Institute.  We looked at the daily schedule for the CI and saw a couple of things that interested us, but we decided to explore the Westfield area instead.  We found the statue of Abe Lincoln talking to the little girl who encouraged him to grow

whiskers,

and another statue I front of the McClurg Museum which was closed.  We stopped in an antique store that had many sale items on tables outside.  I found two bracelets and a cookbook that I purchased.  Then we drove to the BARCELONA LIGHTHOUSE.

Neither one of us wanted to climb the many stairs to the top, but we stepped inside the bottom of the lighthouse and checked out the museum and gift shop.  Then we went to the GRAPE EXPERIENCE, which we both enjoyed.  Before heading to Chautauqua, we went to McDonalds where I got a Dr. Pepper nad Marlene got a sundae.  We kind of decided not to go out to lunch, so I had a muffin and a few potato chips.  We got to the CI a little after one p.m. and parked at the Visitors Center and went in and purchased afternoon passes and parking, and then we parked and walked back.  We did not have to wait long for a shuttle bus which took us to the ATHENAEUM HOTEL.  We sat on the front porch for a bit and then I realized that people were finding seats in the parlor, so we went in, and got seats in the front row.  The parlor gradually filled up and some people had to bring in chairs to sit in.  It was an excellent re-enactment of the Marquis de Lafayette

by Mark SCHNEIDER,who retraced The Marquis' 24 state tour of America 1824-25.  Mark has been Lafayette at Colonial Williamsburg for over 20 years. Then we caught a bus back to the entrance/exit and used the restroom in the Visitors Center and then went back to the car.  We headed  back to Lockport.  I drove a little while since Marlene said she was having a hard time keeping her eyes open.  We stopped at CHIK F-Let and picked up supper.

TUESDAY:   It was a long, busy and very satisfying day!  LIFE GROUP this morning was really good.  After that seven of us went to PANERA for lunch (Cindi, me, Pam, Marlene, Linda, Karen and someone else.  I got my free drink and also the new steak/mozzarella sandwich and onion soup.  After that, I met up with Andrea at the Dale Association for the LOCKPORT TRAVEL CLUB.  Unfortunately, Andrea had to bring the twins (Ella and Lucy) with her.  They were pretty good for quite a while and then they got very restless, so Andrea had to leave.  She only missed about ten minutes of the meeting.  Then I went home.  A couple minutes after I got home, Peggy arrived.  She went outside to work in the Amish shed.  I took a brief nap and got up at five p.m., the same time Peggy left.  Deb and Lori arrived on time and Deb drove us to Middleport to the library for a painting class.

After the class, I offered to treat Deb and Lori to pizza, if we could find a place that was still open (it was a few minutes before eight p.m. We stopped at CHOPS and ordered a half of a sheet pizza.  There was a typo in the menu.  I thought we would be charged fifteen dollars but the bill says twenty six dollars.  I suppose I could have insisted on the printed price, but I paid the full price.  CHOP'S pizza is really good

WEDNESDAY:   I went to the LOCKPORT OUTDOOR STORE and looked at "rain pants", but I did not buy a pair since the price was fifty dollars.  I went to Feel Rite and purchased LACTO and DIGEST GOLD, and then to Wegmans for a few things I needed.  I got a free drink at Panera which is in the plaza just beyond Wegmans, and then I went to FIVE GUYS for lunch.  That burger and fries were great!  When I got home, I took a nap and then went to Peggy and Davids to meet up to go out for chicken wings.  Unfortunately, Peg and I had a miscommunication and while I was driving to their place, they were driving to my place.  I called and then met up with them at 17.  We went to BIG SHOTS.  I had the grilled chicken wrap which was very good.

THURSDAY:  In the morning, I got ready for my afternoon appointment to have the shots in my knees.  Also, Elaine and I communicated via text about going to see HAMILTON at the Regal on 9/5. We agreed to that date and I used my TD credit card to reserve our tickets.  I went to Panera for a drink before meeting up with Jan at the Y at 11:45 a.m. When we were finished there, I had time to go to Lil Caesers to get a lunch special before going to my appointment.  However, after waiting several minutes for someone to come out to the front counter, I gave up and left.  My appointment went OK, the shot into my left knee was very painful.  I stopped and got a six inch sub at SUBWAY before going home.  I ate that at home.  Peg called while I was eating lunch and we agreed to leave her house at three p.m. tomorrow for the EGYPTIAN FESTIVAL in North Tonawanda.  I responded to Lori on FB that I did not feel like going to Widewaters for the live music tonight and asked if she wanted to come over for supper and a movie tonight.  She said yes to that, so I quickly straightened up, washed dishes and finished drying the load of clothes I washed this morning.  I set the table for supper and took a nap.  When I got up, I finished the details for supper.  Lori was a little bit late.  For supper we had chili, cheese and crackers, potato salad, egg salad and black cherries.  We watched the movie MULLY (really a documentary).  This docudrama tells the true story of Charles Mully, a man who gave up his wealth to rescue thousands of orphaned children living on the streets in Kenya. The documentary focuses on the Mully Children's Family, an organization that saves children and provides them with care and education.   It was excellent.

Lori had brought a small watermelon which I cut up and we had that during the movie.  We also watched RUN, BABY RUN, the true story of Nicky Cruz, a follow to the movie we watched last week THE CROSS AND THE SWITCHBLADE.  Lori and I agreed to meet up at two p.m. on Saturday at PRUDDEN and KANDT for the viewing of Sue Rouse's grandson, Miles.

FRIDAY the 22nd:  While watching THE MORNING WIRE on YouTube, they mentioned the Obama deportations vs the Trump deportations, calling the Trump deportations REAL deportations.  Obama has been called the "deporter in chief".  but this is misleading.  Obama's deportations consisted of aliens arrested at the border and turned back.   The current numbers reflect people arrested in the interior and sent out of the country.  SEE THE DIFFERENCE?????

I spent the morning at home.  I ran the dishwasher, paid bills, put yesterdays Dollar Tree shopping items away and got Cassandra's birthday card and check together and mailed it.  I had an early light lunch and took a short nap before getting ready to meet up with Peggy to go to the EGYPTIAN FESTIVALa at St. Mary and Moses Orthodox Church in North Tonawanda.  We both enjoyed the festival.

This historical Sign is across the street from the church
Here is a view of part of the festival.
  Pharoah!

I had a combo plate, which was delicious, and I could not eat all of it.

The food was being freshly prepared!

Inside the sanctuary

Saturday: First thing today, I went to WalGreens and picked up two prescriptions. Lucky for me, there were not a lot of people waiting inside or in the drive through lane.   I puttered around the house in the morning, and I got a package ready to mail to Christa.  Peg came over for a while and finished emptying the Amish shed.  I had a light lunch and showered and got ready to go to the funeral home.  My friend, Sue, lost a grandson a few days ago.  I was planning on meeting Lori there at two p.m. but she was late and I had already been in and signed the book and greeted the family and talked with Sue a bit.  But, I walked back in with Lori, anyways.  Then I returned home.  I contacted Pam and asked her if she wanted to go for a walk in the evening.  She backed out, but I encouraged her and she came over at seven p.m. and we had a nice long walk, and then sat at a picnic table in the schoolyard for a while and talked and then returned to my place and had iced tea.  We talked for a bit and after she left, I found the movie GEORGIA RULE on Hoopla.
