Wednesday, October 8th, 2015 Third Full day in Allegany State Park. (but MOSTLY in Pennsylvania)
Today we wanted to SEE THE ELK. Actually. this is what Leslie wanted to do. Maggie drove and we headed south into Pennsylvania. We had packed our lunch. (I packed ingredients to make a peanut butter and banana sandwich). Maggie started out driving and a strange light came on in her car. Leslie and I looked in her manual, and could not find any info. about that. A man parked near us at the store (where we stopped to check the manual) suggested we drive a bit down the road to the Allegany Maintenance buildings so we did, and two guys there immediately knew what it was, something to do with the fumes around the gas cap, and they said it was nothing to worry about. When we got gas in Bradford, the light disappeared.
We headed south but we really did not know where we were going. We stopped at a small bar/restaurant and were given directions to the State Park, so we decided that was probably our best bet. We stopped at the GEORGE B. STEVENSON DAM
(which was dry) and I asked a guy if there was a picnic area nearby and he gave me directions, which I followed and we came to a spot that was a day use area and turned in and ended up driving on a very long and narrow road, which took us to picnic area. The tables were wet, so we ate our lunch standing up, but it was nice.
Then we continued on the narrow road, and it took us to the Visitors Center, the one we went to last years. We did not stay long and did not see any elk, and headed back to the park, by a different route, one that took us through Port Allegany which we remembered from last year. We stopped at the SHEETZ to use the bathrooms and I purchased a package of Twinkies and a package of Hostess Cupcakes for later on.
We went to the art gallery that Maggie had REALLY wanted to go to since we saw it on another trip.
It was open and one of the owners and his mother were working on a window display. It is an interesting place. Maggie purchased a couple of items.
That was our last stop in PA. We followed the directions from the other day (when I called AAA) and got back to the Quaker area easily. Maggie set the fire up and Leslie fired up the grill. I sliced onions to sautee and I auteed yellow squash and baked potatoes. The ribeye steaks were tender, but did not have a lot of flavor. I brought out the cupcakes and twinkees for desert. We had a nice fire and made s'mores.
I told Maggie and Leslie that if we really want to see elk in Pennsylvania, we need to go and spend more time there. Maybe another time.
