CONNECT Picnic at Goehle Park : July 29, 2018

Image
Peggy held a picnic for seniors at Goehle Park (at Widewaters) after church today.  It was a BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH  and lawn chair event.  I went to Wendy's and picked up food for Peggy and I and met up with her and David and others at the park.  There was a pretty good turn out. We celebrated Jim Anders birthday with cake. I had invited three people:  Elaine, Becky and Mary Ann.  Becky was there for the whole thing and Mary Ann arrived when Peggy and I were cutting and serving cake.   I think everyone had a good time.   Go

OLD OLCOTT DAYS: July 28, 2018

Image
I asked Mary Ann if she wanted to go to Old Olcott Days and she agreed.  Even though she has a cottage in Olcott, she has never been to this event. (I went to it three years ago with Peggy, David and Gail). It was a cool and comfortable day!   I spent close to an hour at IMAGINE COMMUNITY GARDEN and was able to donate some vegetables.  Then I went home and took a shower and had a hot dog for lunch.  Mary Ann arrived and we left my house at 12:40 or so and I drove.  It was easy to find a parking spot.  The first thing we did was go to  YE OLD LOG CABIN, which opened up two years ago.  I had never been to it. On June 20, 1888, Olcott pioneers began erecting a log cabin in Krull Park. It was opened and dedicated on August 8 of that same year at the Pioneer’s Picnic Days, when the public had an opportunity to see how earlier settlers lived. It was a popular stop for local families and visitors to Olcott because of its importance as a place for historical relics. It also showed off

Movie Night at REFUGE TEMPLE

Image
A few days ago Peggy told me that REFUGE TEMPLE would be showing I CAN ONLY IMAGINE on Friday night (tonight).  I asked Elaine and Nancy to go with me.  Elaine said yes, but Nancy could not make it.  I messaged Jenny Adams on facebook and told her about it and she said she would come and when I talked to Vicky Grout on the phone, I mentioned it and she decided to join us. Elaine, Jenny, myself and two women we met (Ruth and Yvonne) went to the front entrance and it was locked.  We rang the bell and nobody responded.  Jenny pretty much decided that there was nothing going on there tonight and we figured it might have been cancelled.    We headed to the parking lot behind the church and found someone at the back door who let us in. About ten people showed up for this event.  Refreshments were being sold.  The movie was GREAT!!!!!  After it was over, Elaine and I asked Peggy, David, Ruth, Yvonne and Vicky if they wanted to join us for ice cream.  Yvonne and Ruth and Vicky agreed and

PROHIBITION CRUISE with Explore Buffalo: July 25, 2018

Image
Peggy asked me last week if I would be interested in going on this cruise and I said yes.  I met up with her at Faith Tab at four p.m. and we headed out.  We stopped at WENDY'S in Lockport and purchased food.  Using the GPS on her phone, we got to the correct spot quickly.  Before parking near the site of the cruise, we stopped at the IRISH FAMINE MONUMENT: Then we found parking and walked to the MISS BUFFALO II:   We boarded a few minutes before six p.m. The cruise was very informative and we both enjoyed it.  Here are a few pictures:  The Buffalo Main Lighthouse.                                          The Edward M. "Sprinkle" for Jessica and the Twins: July 22, 2918

Image
A few weeks ago, Peggy scheduled a SPRINKLE, which is a shower for a Mom of a child who is not expecting or already has a newborn.  Jessica is the Mom of twin girls, whom she is raising alone.  One of the girls had a serious heart problem and Jessica went to New York City with the girls over a year ago for open heart surgery.  It was touch and go for a bit, but today both girls are doing well and they are gorgeous!  I think they turn two sometime this summer. I met up with Peg at church early to start setting up for the SPRINKLE, and then I helped with the event itself. We had pizza, salad, baked beans and mac and cheese and cake. The girls received MANY clothing items!   I gave the each a bucket full of small items.  The sunglasses were a big hit. It was a lot of fun and I think Jessica really appreciated the gifts and all the love!

GRANT'S TOY FARM and more: Saturday July 21, 2018

Image
I saw online that GRANT'S TOY FARM was having an OPEN HOUSE today.  I had wanted to go to Grant's since I first heard about it a year or two ago.  I located information and last night I called Pam and asked her if he was interested in going and she was. BUT FIRST today, I had to go to the Community Garden.  I was the first person to arrive.  Dave arrived shortly after that.  I harvested some green beans, one onion, celery, some cherry tomatoes and some basil, and also one yellow squash.  I left most of that there to be distributed to food banks and took some cherry tomatoes home with me, along with a bit of basil. Pam and I met up at my house and we headed out to Gasport.  Unfortunately, I had looked at last years poster online which said the event started at noon.  We arrived at 12:25 while they were setting up.  We decided to go to Miller's Bulk Food Store for lunch.  We shared a turkey sandwich and a glazed donut, and then headed back to GRANT's.  When we arri

Tonawanda Indian Reservation and Miss Batavia Diner with Pat

FINALLY!   My high school friend, Pat, and I arranged to get together.  We knew each other somewhat in elementary school because she lived one street away from where my family lived on Evans.  I think our mothers were friends.  But we didn't become friends until junior high at Emmett Belknap.  By then her family had moved to Eisenhower Drive.  We  were friends throughout Jr. and Sr. High and we were in the same graduating class (1967).  We went to a lot of basketball games together as well as other school events.  I guess my mother took this picture on graduation day. At any rate, I contacted her several years ago when I started making plans to move  to Lockport.  Various things got in the way of this get together:  her husbands heart surgery, her knee replacement, and my surgeries but mostly I think it was my busyness that delayed our reunion.  TODAY WAS THE DAY!!! We arranged to meet at noon at the MISS BATAVIA DINER in Batavia. I left an hour early so that I could explore

Mrs Rib and Music at the Lockport Presbyterian Home

Image
Elaine asked me if I wanted to go to this event at the Presbyterian Home where she volunteers.  I agreed.  I thought there would be several food trucks but there was really only one:  Mrs. Ribs. I ordered the chicken with two sides.  I was not all that impressed.  The baked beans were from a can and the potato salad was runny and I could not really eat all my chicken because they did not supply a plastic knife to cut it with.  I did not think the workers on the truck were really friendly.  And I cannot figure out why they were SO slow, since the foods, including the meat were already prepared.   There was an ice cream truck offering stuff like fudgsicles etc. The Lockport Community Band played and they were very good.   We went for ice cream at JoJo's after the concert ended.

Schoellkopf Site and the N.A.C.C. in Niagara Falls 7/18/18

Marlene and I planned to do something today because the weather forecast was for a not so hot, not so humid day.   I offered to drive, and that was our plan but when Marlene arrived, as I was putting stuff into my car, she said she wanted to drive, so I let her.  Our first stop was at for gas and then we headed to Niagara Falls, NY to go to the  Schoellkopf Site.   Marlene had never been there.  We parked on a side street next to the aquarium and walked over to the site and took the elevator down. We used the brochure to move between spots.   looking up at the elevator from down in the gorge.  the huge crane that lifts MAID OF THE MIST boats from the river for winter storage. and then we walked part of this trail: Then we took the elevator up and we walked part of this trail :  the GORGE RIM TRAIL, going towards the falls:  The best part was walking beneath the Rainbow Bridge.  Then we walked back to the area of the elevator and had a picnic
