Memorial at FREEDOM SOUTH

Image
Today was the memorial service for my friend Cindi's parents.  Her father died about ten years ago but they didn't have a memorial service because Cindi's mother hated saying goodbye.  Vera passed away around Christmas of last year. As a member of the GO TEAM, I worked in the kitchen setting up for the funeral meal.  I arrived an hour early and worked with Peggy, Ginny and George and Betty.  We got to attend most of the service before running back to the youth sanctuary to put food out.  There was a LOT of food and the deserts were top notch. (Betty said they were better than Paula's Donuts.  After the meal, I helped with the "takedown", washed dishes and put together many of the leftovers for the family to take home.   I was REALLY tired so I did not stay until everything was done.  I got home around four p.m. Later on Betty brought over one of the flower centerpieces and a notebook for the FREEDOM GROUP that Peggy is starting up this coming Thursday

Friday February 28, 2020 Card Party

Image
Betty and I went to the hospital at lunch time for their baked fish, and as usual, it was very good.  Then she dropped me off at Aldi's while she went to the bank and got some cash, and then we went to the post office. I took a nap in the afternoon and when I got up I made a potato salad. I met up with Jan and Sarah at the Presbyterian home for their annual card party.  I looked at the raffle items and then purchased twenty dollars worth of tickets (five sheets). Most of the items were gift certificates.  Sarah, Jan and I played two different games (one was Phase 10) and we each had a desert.   About an hour after the Card Party started, they started the basket raffle. Jan purchased the same number of tickets as I did, and she won THREE items.   I won one item consisting of two gift cards, one for Wagner's and one for the Olive Leaf.   Sarah did not win anything.  Jan gave her the green book (something to do with Lockport history) since she already has that

HISTORY AND MYSTERY SURROUNDING THE SPAULDING MILL 2/26/20

Image
I had heard about this free lecture and slide show a couple of weeks ago.  A couple of days ago I asked Betty if she wanted to go and she did.  Pam called this morning and I told her about it and it interested her. I went to the Y and library this morning and came home and did a bit of cooking and napped before going to pick Betty up.  Pam met us there.  Their were a lot of people there and the presentation was very good.  We saw Bonnie and her sister Kathy there and talked with them a bit. The speaker was Dr. Scott Geise who owns OLD CITY HALL which was a mill right next to the Spaulding Mill.  Here is an old picture of the entrance to the mill which later became the electric company. Upcoming lectures are March 11th INFLUENTIAL WOMEN of the 1800's. April 29th HISTORY of LOCKPORT CHURCHES May 20th AN ARTIST and an INDUSTRIALIST

Feb. 24, 2020 Senior Social and Travel Meeting at the Dale

Image
This morning the Y had their monthly senior social.  I invited Pam, Jan, Marlene, Betty, Elaine, Louise and Sarah.  Pam had to work, Marlene and Betty had a Life Group to attend and Elaine said she has a busy week ahead.  Louise said she would be there, but she did not show up.  Sarah and Jan met me there.  I had also invited an older fellow named Frank, who I have spoken to before (he has the most beautiful Buffalo plaid shirt and I always tell him that I want it) and he came.  It was the usual crowd with one or two new people.  We did not do any introductions, so I do not know their names. We divided into two groups:  Rummikub and Euchre.  Most everyone wanted to play Euchre.  I do not know how to play so I joined Susan's Rummikub group.  It was Sarah, Jan, Susan and I, but Sarah left after the first game in order to play Euchre.   Here is the EUCHRE table:    I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to play Rummikub.  Susan won two games and I won one.    I left at 12:40 to go to

Out and About with Betty on February 22, 2020

Betty and I thought that today was going to be a good day for hiking.  So we made plans to go hiking after a FREE CLOTHING GIVEAWAY at Latter Rain Cathedral.  She picked me up and we went to LRC.  I found several items but Betty did not find any. We went back to my house to use the bathroom and to decide where to go.  We decided on Nature View Park in Amherst.  We found it, but there was a barrier or gate across the entrance to the trail.  At least we think it was a trail, it was snow covered.  Now we know how to get there, and we will go again in good weather. Our back up plan was to go to Amherst State Park so we headed there. We found it easily enough and parked and entered the park.  We walked on a paved trail for a little bit, but it was too cold and windy to go very far.  The park is adjacent to the former Saint Mary of the Angels Convent, which is now being used for apartments for seniors.  The huge old building is magnificent, but it is so huge that I could not find a good

TED's and more.............

I had an appointment at GASTROENTEROLOGY ASSOCIATES today. It was my second appointment, after having tests done.  I was told that all tests were negative (which I already knew) and there is nothing physically wrong.   Apparently, it is a lack of sufficient fiber problem.  I was given a list of high fiber foods and a new regime of medications  (both OTC and prescription).  Sigh...……. I drove back to Lockport and went to the Y to sign Betty and I up for the next two craft classes.  I ran into Elaine and we visited for a bit.  Then I went to Peg's house and took care of Petra.  I realized that I did not have my phone.  I had used it at the Y to call Betty, so I had to go back to the Y and get it. Then I met Betty at TED'S HOT DOGS  where they were offering hot dogs for 93 cent.  (a dollar when you add the tax in. We waited a full hour in line.  We each had a hot dog and shared an order of fries.  After that I went home and did a few things and took a nap. Betty picked me

Sunday after church, Betty and I decided to go out to lunch.   We decided on TWO FORKS UP, a seafood place on the Millersport Highway.  However, when we got there, we found it closed.  We hemmed and hawed a bit and finally decided to try to find the AMHERST BUFFET (Chinese Buffet on Niagara Falls Blvd.    We had to call Peggy (who is in South Carolina) to get directions.   Lunch was great, they had a LOT of seafood.  I started with the Mongolian Grill and then went to the buffet The SENIOR SOCIAL which was supposed to be yesterday (Monday 2/17) at the Y was cancelled and rescheduled for next week.  I ran a few errands in the morning. Early this morning (Tuesday the 18th) Betty and I drove to Buffalo General Hospital and met up with Vicky and Ron.  Vicky had a minor surgery performed and Betty and I kept Ron company for several hours, while we all waited   We had lunch in the cafeteria.  There was a woman selling Polish baked goods and I purchased these Ron, Betty and I each had

Yesterday (the 14th)  Betty picked me up and we went to the hospital for baked fish.  Their baked fish is INCREDIBLE!!!!!   I was unable to finish mine, so brought some home. Today, Betty and I picked Myrna up and we all went to the breakfast at the Methodist Church.  It was very good. Then we went to the LOCKPORT COMMUNITY  FARMERS MARKET at Harrison Place.  It was billed as their VALENTINES DAY MARKET.  Myrna had never been to this and she enjoyed herself.  Both Betty and Myrna made purchases, but I did not buy anything.  I saw a bracelet that I loved, but it was several layers and hard to get on and off so I declined.  Old fashioned Valentines were on display on the tables.                           I noticed this sign and liked it, but I did not sample any of the pickles.                                Myrna and Betty both tried the BLACK GARLIC.  Myrna did not like i.                                    There was live music by CARMEN AND LIZZY.

February 12, 2020

I am still not fully recovered from the head cold that started a week ago this past Monday.  Yesterday, I went to the library and then headed to FREEDOM SOUTH for Elaine's Life Group, but realized that I did not feel well enough to sit for a two hour meeting, so I did not stay.  I stopped at Aldi's on the way home and picked up a frozen pizza for my lunch.   I spent the rest of the day resting, reading and watching TV Today, I went to the hospital and to Dr. Hodges office to get copies of the tests my gastroenterologist ordered last November.  I wanted to drop them off at the local gastroenterologist that I just heard about  since I am thinking I might change doctors so I don't have to drive all the way to Williamsville.  However, the Lockport office is not opened on Wednesdays.  I went to DOLLAR GENERAL and got some tea and picked up lunch at the MAYFLOWER.   I rested all afternoon until Betty picked me up so we could go get Myrna and go to the Dollar Dinner at the First

PIZZA, PAINTING AND PASTRIES (Connect Event at Freedom Church) February 9, 2019

Image
I am not yet 100% over my head cold but I am way better than I was a few days ago, so I decided to go to church today and then to the CONNECT event after church.  I overslept so I was very late for church. I helped set up the tables for the event and then I collected money from people who were staying for the painting.  It was $12.00 for the painting.    Lunch was pizza, green salad and cold drinks and deserts.   And then we sang a hymn.  Peg talked about future events.  Most likely we will take a trip to Miller's Bulk Food Store and then to a restaurant in Medina in April.  Megan Fresch had chosen this painting for the class.  Robin's daughter Lisa joined us.                    This is my painting before doing the jar.  I think Michelle's was very good.                                      Mary with her painting. It was a fun event.  I took Myrna home after it was over.  I was glad to get home and relax.

February 5, 6, and 7th at home

The 5th was a bad day, I felt awful all day The 6th (Thursday) was much better.  I had a couple of phone calls from Oneonta friends.  Connie and Linda.  Linda told me that her friend, Pat Fisher had passed away.  I remembered that Connie knew Pat, too, so I called her and gave her the bad news.  I had met Pat, and helped her with picking up a prescription once, but I had not really known her.  I was disappointed today to wake up and feel worse than yesterday.  I spent a good portion of the day on the living room couch reading NOBODY'S  CHILD.  It is an excellent memoir.  I wrote a review on GOODREADS. I felt better later on in the afternoon and went out and shoveled the front sidewalk.  Just as I was finishing up, a young boy came by and offered to help.  I took his name and phone number and I hope that he will be available in the future.   I took a nap and then got up and decided to make "HAND PIES" using leftover pie crust from Christmas.  They turned out fine

Sunday's church service with the sermon SMOKE AND MIRRORS was sooooo good.   It was Super Bowl Sunday and I decided to treat myself to a good meal.  I purchased two small tenderloin steaks at Niagara Produce, as well as a large white onion. I decided to prepare potatoes, yellow squash and onions in my Foreman Roasting Machine    and the steaks with onion and mushrooms in my small cast iron skillet (in the oven). It was delicious!!! Monday the 3rd I went to the Y in the morning for SILVER SNEAKERS CLASSIC.  I was feeling tired after the class, so I went directly home.  A few hours later, I developed a VERY sore throat.  I took a nap and when I woke up I was achy all over and my head was throbbing.  Oh oh!!!! I started taking zinc and Mucinex.  I slept really good (probably thanks to the Mucinex. This morning I called Betty and asked her to pick me up some more MUCINEX after the Life Group. She did this.  I made some chicken soup with carrots and barley which I had

EAGLE WATCH at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and more: 2/1/2020

Image
Betty and I went to the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge for the EAGLE WATCH, which was part of the IO Palooza event today.  She picked me up and we drove to the Visitors Center on Casey Road.  There were several things going on in this building, and they were offering pieces of cake. The event was a celebration of the  20th year of Iroquois Observations.   We had cake, walked around a bit and went into the gift shop.  We got directions to the location of the Eagle Watch from a worker and then headed to the Cayuga Overlook. They had scopes set up for visitors to see the eagle and the nest.   I took this picture through the scope. We wanted to hike a bit so we got directions from the ranger how to get to a certain trail, but we could not find the road to it.   We headed to the Tonawanda Indian Reservation so we could have lunch at Jan's Sah-Da-Ko-Nee Restaurant.  We entered the reservation via Bloomingdale Road, the road the restaurant is on, but since there were ver
