Monday March 30th PARADE

Image
The parade was the highlight of my day.  I think it was around noon.  Betty called me and said that she just watched police and firetrucks and a lot of cars go by slowly, beeping and honking and some sirens.  They were headed north on Transit, so I figured they might circle around and come down Prospect.  I quick put my shoes on and grabbed my camera and headed to the corner.  I could hear it all going down Hawley Street and then they came up Prospect heading north.     Unfortunately, I did not realize that my lens had gotten damp, so my pictures came out blurry.   I guess it was mostly teachers from Anna Merritt School and it appeared that a lot of cars just randomly joined in the parade.  I talked with my neighbor Mary Turk for a bit, since she heard the ruckus and walked down to the corner, too. I finished up posting Peggy's pictures to her flickr account and I worked on putting in my pictures from my Oregon 2009 trip.    Talked on the phone with a few people inclu

I slept in a bit, got up and prepared myself some oatmeal/egg/banana pancakes, had them with applesauce. At ten a.m.  I found FREEDOM CHURCHE's online service.  It was very good.  When it was over, I called Betty and suggested she and I go for  walk.  We met up at Outwater Park and walked a bit.  She got tired first, since she had been working at home (cleaning her entryway and stairs).   On the way back home I stopped and picked up an open cabinet which had been put out to the curb.  The owner came out and explained that she was getting ready to move back to Arizona. Later on I found a spot to put it in my living room. I prepared lunch when I got home.  Peggy called to see if I wanted to join her and David for a walk, but I declined.  I called Mary Anne and talked with her for about twenty minutes. There was a brief storm with high winds, Jennifer Cummings posted this picture of "the leading edge of the storm" on facebook; In the evening,

I did not go to sleep until around three a.m. this morning because of finishing reading this book.  I did not even feel tired and I don't think I had a real nap yesterday.  Anyways, I finished reading it and it was so good.  Then I was awake at eight thirty.  ugh This morning I decided to make a meatloaf and roasted potato wedges for lunch.  The meat loaf turned out great!   In the afternoon, I took a nap and I think I slept for 90 minutes.  I woke up feeling better. I met up with Marlene at the ROYALTON RAVINE and we took a nice (but muddy) walk on one of the trails.  Marlene knows her way around.   I stopped at the TOPS at the Y (I think it is referred to as the Rochester Road Tops.  I found some toilet paper, tissues and paper towels for Mary Anne and picked up some groceries for myself. I called MA and told her I was on the way with some paper products.  As I pulled up in front of her house, a woman was walking down Maple Street and as MA came out onto her porch,

March 26th, 2020 PANDEMIC PERSISTS DAY 11

This morning Peggy held her FREEDOM GROUP on zoom.com.  It went great: After it was over, I had lunch and then met up with Marlene at Hillmans and we took a walk in THE VILLAGE and the WOODLANDS.    Then I dropped of a couple of things to Mary Anne.   In the evening, I called my friend Linda (who lives in Oneonta) and also Louise (I left her a message). I read this book I started last night,  for about an hour,  Betty picked up a few items for me while she was shopping and then she got very upset when I met her at the door and would not let her in.  We talked later on and she apologized.  I was not mad at her, since I understand her viewpoint.  I am just being more cautious than she is.

March 25th, 2020 PANDEMIC continues

I slept pretty good last night.  Made myself some banana/egg/oatmeal pancakes for breakfast.  I had a lot of phone calls this morning and I made several calls myself:  Gail, Geneva, Elian (Elaine Fezio) and Betty.  I checked out Showtime and Epix (provided free for a few weeks by Spectrum), and found this movie, which I watched and loved.    I scanned more of Peg's photographs and added them to her flickr account, read some in the Bible and worked a bit on the jigsaw puzzle I started a few days ago. I had a bunch of phone calls this morning, some made and some received.  I called Geneva and Elian and we chatted.  I was on and off the phone with Mary Anne, who was hoping to come home today.   Kevin and Rita picked her up and I got a call around three thirty that she was home.  I gathered up her mail and her keys and put them in a PASSPORT bag that I purchased for her last summer in Rome and never gave to her.  I dropped the bag off at her house.   Shortly after I got home,

I did the SELF TEST for Lactose Intolerance this morning, and the results seem to indicate that I AM lactose intolerant. I worked on scanning some of Peg's trip pictures and uploading them to her flickr account.  She called and then dropped off a corned beef and cabbage dinner for me, without coming in.  Late morning I called Marlene and asked if she wanted to take a walk and we agreed to four p.m. at the same place we started our walk the other day. We had a good walk, walking in areas south of the canal, close to downtown that I had never been on before.   This is on the south side of the canal not far from the old Spaulding Mill, I think it may have been a generating system...…………….? Then I went to get Mary Anne's mail and then I decided to go to Niagara Produce since I was in the mood for some of their ham salad.  I picked up eggs and an orange, too.  The shop was not crowded...….I wore a mask in.    When I drove by the Presbyterian Home, I saw several bins loaded wi

Monday, March 23rd, 2020 GREEN BOOK WATCH PARTY and more

Image
It was a damp, drizzly day so I did not call anybody about the possibility of taking a walk.   I scanned some of Peggy's photos into her flickr account and cleaned my small shelves and the items on them, putting some of them away. Mid morning, Elaine called to tell me that Spectrum customers have free SHOWTIME.  She said that the movie GREEN BOOK was going to be on one of the Showtime channels at 4:45.   I decided to arrange a small WATCH PARTY.   I called Myrna, Barb and Betty and they all agreed to join with Elaine and me in watching GREEN BOOK.   When this crisis is over,  the five of us will get together to discuss it. Shortly before the movie started, Mary Anne's surgeon called to tell me that the procedure went well.  She had a CAROTID STENT LEFT SIDE performed, and will have new medications prescribed.  I made a few phone calls and sent some FB messages to people about the successful procedure. The movie was great, but I missed the last portion because Peggy cal

YESTERDAY  (the 21st) I went over to pick up Mary Anne's mail, and I dropped a few masks and gloves off to Peggy.  I went to Rite Aide to get my prescription.  I braved going into DOLLAR TREE, where I found a few wipes (not the surface wipes I was hoping to find) and I got a small bottle of Clorox.  Spent the rest of the day at home. TODAY:  I spoke with both Marlene and Peggy before ten a.m. hoping to help them both access FREEDOM SOUTH's online broadcast.  Peggy was able to watch it on her phone via facebook, but Marlene could not watch it since she does not have FB.  Apparently, the website crashed because of so many hopeful participants!    The service was very good. I talked with Kevin on the phone and he agreed to go to Buffalo to pick Mary Anne up when she gets released from Buffalo General, either tomorrow or Tuesday.  He and his wife, Rita, are going to go to MA's house tomorrow and clean and straighten up. Marlene and Betty and I agreed to an afternoon walk,

March 20, 2020 STUCK at HOME DAY FIVE

First day of self imposed quarantine.  I never got dressed.  I watched the governor and the president on television in the morning.   I talked to Peggy on the phone a couple of times, as well as Christa and Megan, and Tyler.   I decided it was a good time to scan some photos and add them to Peg's flickr account. Late afternoon, I talked with a doctor at Gates Vascular who told me that Mary Anne had agreed to a procedure that would look at a blocked artery on the same side in which she suffered the stroke.  Later on Bianca messaged me that she will have a stent put in on Monday. Myrna called in the evening and we spoke for a few minutes.

DAYS TWO, THREE AND FOUR: March 17th, 18th and 19th 2020 Mary Anne, Liz and MORE

On Tuesday the 17th I had an appointment with Dr. Chubineh, a gastroenterologist who has an office in Lockport.  I like him and feel very hopeful that he will help me find out what the problem is.  I am officially firing GASTROENTEROGIST ASSOCIATES, mostly because I never get to see a doctor there, only paraprofessionals who seem very knowledgeable but turn out to not be very helpful. The 18th in the morning,  I got a phone call from Mary Anne.  She could hardly talk, but she told me that she thought she may have had a stroke.    I told her to unlock her front door and get dressed and I would call 911.   I quickly got dressed and by the time I got to her house the ambulance and EMT's were there.  They took her to Buffalo General.   The hospital is on "lockdown" due to the corona virus, so I did not go with her or meet her there.  I made sure her house was locked up after the ambulance left. I got hold of her in the evening, after she had been tested and given a roo

Liz 3/16/2020 DAY ONE: IT STARTED TODAY

Image
Todays Newspaper    Last night around nine p.m., Betty called me and told me she needed to go to the Lockport hospital to meet Liz (her son in laws sister) who was going there by ambulance.  She asked me if I would ride along with her and I said yes.  She picked me up and we headed towards the hospital.  While driving there, her phone rang and she was told that the ambulance was taking Liz to Buffalo General Hospital.  Betty told whoever was on the phone (either Liz's mother or brother) that she could not drive to Buffalo so late at night but would go up in the morning (which was today 3/16). She picked me up a little after nine a.m. today and we headed to Buffalo.  We parked at Roswell and walked over to Buffalo General and found Liz on the 15th floor.  She developed difficulty breathing a couple of days ago, and has been told that she has pneumonia. I deliberately did not sit or stand close to Liz because of my concerns about the virus.   Shortly after we arrived, Governor

TWO HIKE SUNDAY: March 15, 2020

Christa pretty much made me promise to not go to church today, due to the Corona Virus issue.  I agreed to stay home.    I watched the church service online, and it was very good.  We were supposed to host a group of Canadian students tonight, who were going to put on a play, but they cancelled. Betty called me as soon as church let out and said "DO NOT take a nap, we are going hiking"  I agreed and she picked me up.  I had compiled a short list of possibilities and we chose to go to the TILLMAN ROAD WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA in Clarence. It was not difficult to find.  The first part, which started at the area we parked in was a very nice boardwalk. Then it turned into a well maintained path, which branched off.  We walked around a very large pond or maybe it was a small lake. The last stretch of our walk was along the roadway, and we ended up back at the car.  Then we drove a bit further down  Tillman Road, and ended up going around in a circle, on other ro

On Friday morning I dropped my car off at NORTH TOWN SUBARU, so that a recall item could be repaired.  The advisor encouraged me NOT to wait for the repair since it could take several hours, so I agreed to accepting a ride home to Lockport.  I spent the morning and good portion of the afternoon at home, and got caught up on a few things.  They picked me up in time for me to get the car and go to TAYLOR and REYNOLDS to pay my respects to my brother in law Bob (Gail's husband) because his sister Patsy passed away after a long, distressing illness. Then I picked up a couple of pieces of pizza at PIZZA OVEN for my supper.   I baked chocolate chip cookies in the evening and prepared vegetables for Saturdays dinner. I chatted with Christa late Friday night and she pretty much made me promise to stay home from church on Sunday, because of the corona virus issue. Saturday he 14th, I also stayed at home, and prepared a corned beef on cabbage dinner for Peggy and David.  I put celery,

Outing with Peg and Betty: 3/12/20

Peggy's LIFE GROUP was this morning.  It was a small group, Peggy, Betty, Diane and I.  It was a very good meeting.  Fortunately, Betty called me last night at 9:30 and reminded me that we had homework.  I completed it this morning before leaving. After the meeting was over, Betty said she was going to BJ's.  I asked if I could ride along, and then Peggy decided she wanted to go, also, to get cat food and cat litter.   On the way there, we did some debating about where to go for lunch.  Betty suggested the MARKET CAFE at Wegman's.  We agreed.  It is a great place to have lunch, there is a LOT to  choose from at various stations for $9.99 a pound.  My plate of food was a little bit over five dollars and then I bought a croissant for $1.50. Then we headed to BJ's.  I wanted two things:  bananas and toilet paper.   Because of the corona virus scare, people have been stockpiling toilet paper.  There was not a single roll available.  Also, no bananas.    I did purchase a

Elaine, Kathy and I went to the corned beef and cabbage dinner at the Cambria Congregational Church.   Kathy came to my place and Elaine picked us up here.   I had also invited Sarah, and she met us there, but she decided to get a take out meal.  She is concerned that other people who know about her recent cruise and her one day quarantine (while two of the staff on the ship were tested,  due to an exposure to the  Corona virus) would be upset at seeing her there.  The two staff members who were tested were found to NOT have the virus, so I don't think its a problem.    Anyways, the meal was delicious, as it always is.  I brought half of it home with me. After the meal, Elaine and I went to the PALACE for the second in the SPEAKER SERIES.   We met up with Betty and Myrna and Marlene arrived a bit late (but in time for Brenda Reaves re-enactment of Eliza Mossell.   Bonnie and her sister, Kathy were there, along with a friend of theirs who I have met but I cannot recall her name.

3/8/20 ALIEN INTRUSION

Image
After church today, Betty and I went to DRI for their SUNDAY BRUNCH.  It was very good. I was getting ready to take a nap when Marlene called and asked me "are we still on for later today?"   I had totally forgotten that I had agreed to go with her to Niagara Frontier Bible Church in Lewiston to listen to a guest speaker.  She reminded me and I agreed to be ready by five p.m. when she would pick me up. We located the church easily enough, it is just off of the Indian reservation.  The speaker was Gary Bates and the topic was ALIEN INTRUSION. The presentation was great.  The basic premise was that alien abductions are not real, but they are a spiritual phenomena.   He did not use the word "satanic" but I think that is the idea he intended to impart.  He did not say that people who tell about their alien abductions are lying, in fact, he encouraged us to listen to them and tell these people that we believe them.    There was a women in the audience who wanted

Saturday March 7th, 2020: Market and Kenan

This morning Betty and I went to the St Patrick's Day Market at Harrison Place. *but first she wanted me to see her new craft project: Just about the first person we ran into was Pam, who was working a table with information about LOCKPORT CARES. She asked me to take a picture of her and the other three workers.  I took a few with a phone belonging to one of them and one on my camera. There was live music (Irish music) Most of the vendors today were the same ones from other markets.  I purchased an Amish donut and a small loaf of raisin bread from Maverick Farms, and also a meat stick from the Kiwanis table.   Later on, we went to the Taylor Theatre at the Kenan Center for an "author talk".  Tina Cassidy wrote a book about Alice Paul and other suffragette.  Her presentation was very interesting.  I learned a lot. C After the presentation, there was a book signing and refreshments in the Kenan mansion.  We ran into David and Peggy there.  I purchased
