SUNDAY, February 28, 2021 Day Trip to Daufuskie Island

Image
We skipped church this morning because it was the only good weather day available to take a ferry to Daufuskie Island.  We were able to book seats on a small private ferry service (Vagabond Cruise) from HHI to Daufuskie.  We had to get up a bit earlier today in order to be at the ferry site by 8:30.  There were about 12 other people on the ferry with us.  The trip over took very close to one hour, and was a bit chilly due to being so early and the fog.  When the fog lifted it immediately warmed up.  When we got to the island we proceeded to the General Store where we picked up our rental golf cart.  We had a map of the interesting/historical sites on the island.  Since we wanted to see as much as possible, we were kind of pinched for time and had to move right along.   This is the OYSTER UNION COMMUNITY HOUSE, recently refurbished.                     Lunch at Lucy Bell's Cafe was very good.  I think the coleslaw was the best I have ever had.   Small model of PRAISE HOUSE.  The first thing we did this morning was go to McDonalds for breakfast.   The dining room was not open because they did not have sufficient staff available so that there was someone free to clean and disinfect.  So, we ordered our food and took it to a shelter adjacent to the parking lot and sat on benches to eat it.  There was a homeless man there and Peggy purchased some breakfast food for him.  Then we went to look for a Visitors Center to get information about taking a ferry to Daufuskie Island.  We were successful in getting the info. and then we located the spot where the ferry leaves  and then we called and made the reservations for the ferry and for a golf cart to use once we get there.   David and Peggy wanted to go to a spot outside of a golf course and look for golf balls and I agreed.  I stuck with them for about fifteen minutes and by then I was not finding any balls and getting my legs scratched up, so I walked back to the car and waited for them and then I drove down and

Wormsloe Historical Site in Savannah 2/26/21

We set out on our way to Savanna around nine a.m.  We dropped David off at his golf course and proceeded to WORMSLOE HISTORIC SITE.  After picking up our tickets and map, we drove in to the Visitors Center and museum, by driving down this beautiful driveway.     Plantation ruins. The blacksmith was busy making nails. There is a virtual geocache at this grave site. We were there for a couple of hours and then decided to find something to eat and go to the Bonaventure Cemetery.  We found a CHICK-fil-A and purchased salads *the market salad* and located a nice park to have a picnic lunch.   David called and he had finished up early so we could not go to the cemetery.  We picked him up and headed to HHI and had supper at Stellini's.  I had the eggplant parmesan, which was delicious.   David's twin brother, Robert, passed away today in Florida.  He was suffering from lung cancer and then contracted COVID.  He was almost 76, the same age as David.  The call came in after we picked

February 25, 2021 Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room

Image
I have wanted to eat at Mrs. Wilkes since I first heard about it three years ago.   Today was a beautiful weather day, so David wanted to go golfing.  He had reservations for a golf course near Savannah, so Peg and I dropped him off and then we drove into Georgia and found Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room. I think we arrived about one p.m.  While Peg paid for parking, I got in line to get a table.    Normally, meals are served inside FAMILY STYLE, meaning that a bunch of customers are all seated together at a table and the food is brought in serving dishes to the table.  But now, because of the pandemic, all food is served at tables outside now.  You choose a meat and three sides from this menu. I chose fried chicken, butter peas, red rice and cabbage.  Peg chose chicken and dumplings and yams. We located a table and disinfected it.  We were told there would be a 45 minute wait.  I took a short walk, about 20 minutes and when I returned, Peggy had gone up to pick up our box of food.  Everythi

February 24, 2021 Crescent Pointe Golf Course

Peggy and I accompanied David when he went golfing at Crescent Point Golf Course.  He was set up to golf with three other guys.  Peg and I walked along, and sometimes rode in the golf cart for the first nine holes.  Then we left the golf course and went shopping at some outlet stores not far from the course.  First we went to Bath and Body Works because Peg had two $25 gift certificates.  She bought me a couple of items.  Then we went to a shoe store where she got a pair of tan flats and I got a pair of New Balance sneakers. I think my last sneaker purchase was two pair that I bought before going to Israel in 2017.  I am so glad I found a pair today, because I HATE shoe shopping.  I wear inserts which means I have to take them out of the shoes I am wearing and then put them in the ones I try on to make sure they will work. Every time I would bend over to tie shoes, my glasses would start to fall off. So, it was not a fun experience.   Then we went to Old Navy where I purchased two shir

First Day on HHI (2/23/21)

This was our first full day on HHI.  We decided to not do any sightseeing, and instead to pick up groceries etc. at Walmart BUT FIRST, David said washing the car on HHI after arrival is a tradition so we did that.  I would have skipped having the car washed in Lockport if I had known about this tradition. trees near the car wash facility. then to Krogers where we purchased groceries and then back to the condo, for a snack and rest, I took a nap and listened to Ben Shapiro's podcast for today.  Peg and David did laundry (since they each purchased a clothing item earlier today) and took a short walk down to the harbor.  We went to Stellini's for the early bird special.  Peg and I shared two chicken dishes (chicken cacciatore and chicken marsala)  Both were very good.  When we got back to the condo, we took a short walk down to the harbor.  Then Peg and I worked out a plan for tomorrow.  Peg had brought this book with her, and I started reading it.

We had breakfast at the hotel, which was kind of scanty due to the pandemic but we were given "go bags"  with a few items in them to take with us.  Then we headed south. After a few hours of driving, we had lunch at Long John Silver, I had the lunch special of a piece of fish, three shrimp, two hush puppies, a drink and coleslaw for  a little over five dollars.  Then we got back on the road and kept going. On the way, Peg and I read out loud  from the book IS THIS THE END by David Jeremiah. We picked up a light supper at a Bojangles in Clarksburg, Peg and I both had  the ham biscuits, two for three dollars, and they were delicious. We arrived at our condo around 9:15 I think.  We were all very worn out.  Our lodging turned out to be very very nice, large and well decorated.  David raved about it!  Apparently, it is the nicest place he has stayed at in forty years of coming to HHI.  It really is great to have my own bathroom, just outside my bedroom door.

I found the missing keys this morning IN MY CAR.  They had slipped down between the console and the drivers seat.  They were kind of stuck there.  I had looked under the seat, as did both David and Peg yesterday.  This morning, when I got into my car, I dropped something and when I reached over for it, I happened to look down and saw something white.  I figured it was a napkin or tissue, but when I reached down and touched it, IT WAS MY KEYS. (the white remote for my household alarm system) I went to WalMart and purchased the italian bread that Peggy needed for the luncheon.  I filled my gas tank up and also had the car washed.  I went home for a little while and did a couple of things, I don't remember what, and headed to church.  I sat in my usual spot in the last row, with Myrna and Betty and Myrna's granddaughter.  Ben preached and he did a great job! I took two lasagna lunches and delivered one to David and then went home and had lunch and finished loading my car up for t

Saturday, February 20th, 2021 LOST KEYS, etc

When I was getting ready to go to Lewiston to visit Carrie and sign a document giving permission for her to get a COVID vaccination, I could not find my car keys.   I had to use one of my extra keys to go.  The visit went well and the papers got signed.  When I got home, I continued to search. I even emptied out the kitchen garbage.  When Peggy and David came over to replace the furnace filters, they helped me look, but the keys are NOWHERE to be found, at least in the house.  It is possible that I dropped them in the driveway.  The last time I remember having them in my hand was Thursday afternoon.  When I got back from my dermatologist appointment and picking up my prescription and took my bags (including take out food from Wendy's and Arby's) and took my bags into the house, I realized that I had left my two bags with my Paula's Donuts in the back seat.  So I went out to the garage and got them out of the car.  I may have dropped them in the driveway when I walked back

I spent the day at home continuing to get ready for my trip.  I packed my two small bags which I will take into our first nights hotel.  Because of COVID, I decided to take my sheet sleeping bag and a couple of extra pillow cases, which I will use in the hotel/motel.  Hence, I needed another bag.   Peg called from WalMart where she was shopping for Sunday's senior lunch at Freedom.  They do not have any sliced italian bread today, and she asked me to pick up the bread on Sunday before church.  I agreed to that.  Going to WM will give me one final opportunity to buy anything else I need for the trip. I prepared myself a nice late lunch.  I sauteed/steamed cabbage and onions on top of the stove.  I put slices of yellow squash and asparagus in the oven at 400 degrees.  I put some chicken in my George Forman grill. I had some leftover spaghetti with very little sauce on it from SOLID ROCK, so when the cabbage/onions were pretty much done (crisp tender) I pushed that mixture to the sid

Thursday, February 18, 2021 Dermatologist, Y etc.

On the way to my dermatology appointment in Clarence, I stopped at Paula's Donuts and bought three donuts, two for me and one to give Peggy to give to David. This was the first time I found Dr. Dee's  office without driving by at least once.  His sign is SO small, that it is hard to see and every other time I drove by it at least once, but sometimes two or three times, before seeing it.   Anyways, the spot near my right eye that I have been concerned about is harmless, which is a relief.  I paid my bill, made an appointment and picked up an assortment of free samples on my way out.  I met Peg at the Y. Our plan was to walk the track, but she does not have  a Y membership and because of COVID, they don't let visitors use the facility anymore.  That was a disappointment.  So, Peggy left and I stayed and walked the track about twenty minutes.  I ran into Kathy as I was leaving and we chatted a bit on the way out to our cars, but it was too cold to stop and talk.   I went to Ar

I slept late and then prepared banana pancakes for my breakfast.  I puttered around doing a few things and I worked on my new document that has info about things to do during my upcoming trip to Hilton Head and emailed it to Peg so she could print it out for me.  I took a shower and washed my hair and then called Betty to see if she wanted to meet me at the Y in order to walk the track.  She said she was in the middle of  a project and that it is too cold out.  I called Pam but she had already walked earlier today. I went to the Y and walked for about 25 minutes or so.  I bought two raffle tickets for their new fundraiser which means that I will be eligible to win any of these prizes, which will be drawn for once daily.   After the Y, I decided to stop by the VISION place where I purchased both pairs of my glasses over three years ago.  My sunglasses were feeling loose, almost falling off when I bend over.  I was the only customer there and was treated royally!  Both pairs were purcha

Monday:  Late morning, I went to the post office to mail a couple of items and then I dropped some of Mary Anne's paperwork off at her lawyers office.  I also went to Niagara Produce and purchased some bananas and some asparagus.   I worked on trip plans and preparations and watched some of BRIDGERTON.   Tuesday:  Mike and Dillon came over and shoveled my sidewalk.  I cleaned out an area between my driveway and my steps so that the mail carrier could get to my mailbox without climbing in or over a huge hill of snow left by the plow.   I sorted through Peg's brochures, booklets, etc for the upcoming trip and also through mine, and threw out doubles.  Peg's are all back together in her bag.   Betty called to say that she called SOLID ROCK and was told that the take out spaghetti dinner was still on, so I asked her to pick my dinner up and she agreed.   I rested in my recliner and listened to Ben Shapiro, who is  my favorite conservative podcaster.  He talked about how the med

I arrived early at church and saved Myrna's favorite seat for her.  I also saved a seat for Betty.  Church was pretty full this morning:  I estimate that there were probably about 70 people there.  I don't know how many were at the first service.   After church, I stopped at the place on the Transit and vacuumed the passenger side (both front and back).  Then I went to Arby's and used the $5.00 meal deal coupon.   After lunch, I called MEDICAL GUARDIAN to make sure I had a working number.  I was connected to "Annie" who gave me her direct phone number for Connie to call her.  Their product seems to be the best LIFE ALERT system for Connie.  Then I called Connie and gave her the info.  Then she told me that she had to go to the ER in the middle of the night due to excessive nose bleeding.  Her nose is packed, and causing her a lot of pain.  The doctor who treated her told her she would not be in pain.  I told her to call the ER and get some advice.  Then I went on

First thing in the morning, I watched the rest of LIKE DAD, with Kelsey Grammar.(on netflix)  It is a good movie but there is an awful lot of the F word.  It is a nice day out there, but I decided to stay home.  I slept in a bit, and then prepared bacon and banana/oatmeal  pancakes for my breakfast and then started watching the TRIAL at ten a.m. when it resumed.  I worked on various tasks relative to my trip to South Carolina ONE WEEK FROM TODAY.  I have all my meds and supplements in order, as well as a box of extras to keep in the car.   Leslie called in the early afternoon.  She has had both of her COVID vaccinations.  I continued to try to get an appointment without success. I watched the impeachment trial  Trump got off, but that was predicted from the beginning.  I am not sure that justice was served.  There are so many angles to what happened.  For example: there were signs and warnings that there might be trouble, but the mayor didn't do anything to prevent it.  Also, some

I took some newspapers over to Elaine and then went to the post office where I mailed a couple of old newspaper clippings and some photographs to my cousin Susan and a book to Cassandra.  Elaine gave me a slice of lasagna when I dropped off the newspapers.   I went upstairs to look for a certain summer shirt that I want to take to Hilton Head.   I prepared lunch and turned TV on, so I could watch the D.C. Hearings.  It was the day for Trump's lawyers to speak on his behalf.  I thought they made a good case, comparing what DJT did to what several Democrats had to say, things that encouraged destruction and riots after George Floyd was killed by a cop. Connie called in the evening and we spoke for 45 minutes or so.  This past Tuesday, she dozed off and fell out of her chair and somehow got tangled up in her exercise bike.  She drove herself to Fox Hospital where she spent five hours or so in the ER, having various scans done.  She is all bruised up.  I encouraged her to get  a LIFE

Thursday, February 11, 2021 Life Group

Peg's Life Group was this morning, at Freedom Church.  Betty and I attended in person and Bobbie joined us over the phone.  The topic was avoiding being a people pleaser, in favor of being a God pleaser.  It was pretty good.   When it was over, Betty and I went out to pick up lunch stuff, and Peg, Betty and I had lunch together at the church.  I had a grilled chicken sandwich from Cucimano's (formerly Andersons).  It was quite good.  I wish I had more four dollar coupons for this sandwich. I watched part of the impeachment trial. After napping I had a light supper and I continued checking out Peg's geocache information.  I found an envelope and got the package ready to mail to Cassandra.  I am going to mail her the book about Anne Franks childhood friend.

After trying to make an appointment for a COVID vaccination (not successful),  I decided to go to FeelRite this morning to get some LACTO. I called first and placed my order and paid for it with a credit card, so that I could take advantage of "curbside service".   That worked well, and as I was leaving, I saw that WEGMANS was right across the road (the transit) so I decided to go over and get a  couple of loves of Organic Rosemary Sourdough bread.  I also picked up a few other items.   My order from the VERMONT COUNTRY STORE arrived last night and I opened it up today.  I tried on the denim shirt to make sure it fit OK  (it fits well).  I really like it.   and decided to wash it, so I gathered other items and did a load of laundry.   When I got back to Lockport, I stopped at McD's for a dollar drink and then took one of the loaves of bread over to Peggy.  She loves it as much as I do.  When I got home, I prepared lunch and settled down in front of TV to watch the IMPEACH

Tuesday, February 9th, 2021

I went to the Ladies Life Group at Freedom Church this morning.  There were only six of us there.  It went well.  Marlene asked me if I can help her out next Tuesday by picking her up at Hillmans after she leaves her car there, and then taking her back after the Life Group.  On the way home, I stopped at Mark's and picked up a slice of pizza for my lunch.  Elaine left me a voicemail to tell me she was able to get both of her vaccinations scheduled.  Paula Falsioni called, also.  I need to call her back.  She purchased and donated two books to the Lockport Public Library, in remembrance of  Mary Anne.   I started watching the impeachment hearing online and then switched to CBS on TV.   I fell asleep before DJT's second lawyer started to speak.  In my opinion, the first lawyer who spoke did NOT do a good job. Betty called.  She is going stir crazy, having been at home since her eye surgery.  I suggested that maybe she and I can have lunch together on Thursday at Freedom Church,

I went to NW bank this morning and cashed a check in order to have some cash.  I went to the place on Transit that offers vacuum cleaners for the inside of cars.  The first place did not work so I wasted a dollar, but the second one worked, and I cleaned the drivers side of the car and the back. It was too cold to continue.  Then I went to Niagara Produce and Dollar Tree, and stopped at BK to pick up a $5 meal deal. I also made a few phone calls hoping to make an appointment for a vaccination. After lunch, I continued working on organizing and cleaning my dining area.   And I sorted through some of the stuff I took out of my car and brought into the house.  I wiped down the drivers side dash, too.  I messaged Cassandra on FB and asked her if she is interested in the book I just finished reading, it is by Anne Frank's childhood friend before Anne and her family went into hiding.  She said she would love this book, so I agreed to send it to her.  She wants to send me a book she is f

When I got up it was snowing heavily.  I decided to put my car in the garage in case the plow fellow were to come before I left for church.  I am glad I did that because a few minutes after I came inside, the plow fellow came and did both driveways.  I decided to watch church online instead of going because of the relentless snow.  I called Myrna to tell her that I would not be able to save her a seat and she said she was going to stay home, also.  It stopped snowing about 10:20 and the sun came out and I wished that I had gotten myself ready for church.  There was not enough time for me to get ready and get over to the other end of town in time.  I called Janie to tell her that my sidewalk needs shoveling and she agreed to bring Dillon over to do it later on, since Dominic had already left for work.   I watched the rest of THE DIG, a true story.   It is an excellent movie.   I decided it would be a good day to prepare myself a nice meal.  I took a steak out of the freezer, thawed it

Several inches of snow was predicted, but I think we only got an inch.  Not even enough to have to shovel.  But it was really cold outside.    In the morning I made a CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE PIE and some coleslaw to take to Peggy's house for dinner.  I also continued to work on organizing tasks in my dining area.  I am getting rid of some junk and making some good progress!  Peggy called and Betty called twice and Pam called and asked me if I wanted to go for a walk.  I told her I was in the middle of a couple of organizing projects.  I watched part of THE DIG on Netflix and napped and showered and went to Peg's house, arriving around five p.m.  David had made a meatloaf, Peg baked potatoes and a butternut squash.  They both liked my coleslaw.  The pie was very rich and I left it at their house.  After supper we watched NOAH, a production of Sight and and Sound Theatre in Lancaster, PA.  It was offered free on TBN at Easter time and Peg and David DVR'd it.   It was a lot diff

It was very cold and windy today.  I decided to stay home and get a few things done.  I was glad that someone from the Glen Iris called and I was able to reserve a room for Leslie and I for our get together the end of May, to celebrate our birthdays.  I emailed her the information. I did a few organizational jobs in my dining area, mostly straightening out part of the sewing cabinet on the way above my microwave, so that I could have a spot to put tape and glue, freeing up an outside shelf on that cabinet for most of my collection of Fenton Hobnail Salt Cellars.    Like these on etsy   Except I have two round ones.  I always look for more in antique shops, but never find any more.  My grandmother Niethe had one or two of the blue square ones which is why I started to collect these several years ago. Betty called to tell me she got a new Verizon phone.  Peggy called to suggest I try again to schedule a COVID vaccination since she was able to schedule one for David the day before we lea
